Daniel Barenboim
Daniel Barenboim is an Argentinean-Israeli conductor and pianist. Born in Russia, he studied piano with his father (who remained his only piano teacher), orchestral conducting with Igor Markevich in Salzburg and harmony and counterpoint with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.
As a teenager, he played a sensational debut in London’s Wigmore Hall.
Barenboim’s conducting career took off in 1968, after he conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in New York. He has been Chief Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, La Scala in Milan and other orchestras. He is currently an honorary member of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Staatskapelle Berlin, where he has worked since 1992.
He also frequently conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker, where he led their New Year’s Day concerts in the Musikverein, in 2009 and 2014. Barenboim works actively to promote peace in the Middle East through music.
