Who is Sakari Oramo?

Sakari Oramo has been a regular guest conductor for the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2001. The Finnish musician is conductor laureate of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, honorary conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and artistic partner with the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln (they recently toured in Japan). He celebrates the extension of his contract as chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, leading them up to their centenary year in 2030.

Previously, Sakari Oramo was chief conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (1998-2008), the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (2003-2012; initially he was concertmaster there), the West Coast Kokkola Opera (2004-2018) and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (2008-2021). In the current season, Sakari Oramo leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the British premiere of Saariaho’s Hush and focuses on the works of Grażyna Bacewicz, Britta Byström and Dora Pejačević.
Busoni's Piano Concerto, whose recording with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Gerstein received an International Classical Music Award, he conducts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Orchestre national de France. Sakari Oramo recorded Langgaard’s First Symphony with the Berlin Philharmoniker, Sibelius’s complete symphonies with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Nielsen’s and Schumann’s with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
His most recent performance at The Concertgebouw was in the summer of 2017 with the latter orchestra and soprano Renée Fleming.
